Maintenance Tips For Novice Homeowners

March 11, 2021 by Rachel Leave a Comment

Being a homeowner is about more than hosting dinner parties and backyard barbeques. There are certain responsibilities that come along with owning your home, especially if you plan to live on the property for a long time.

If you’re not sure where to begin caring for the home you worked so hard to acquire, then some research is at hand. Take this moment to read through a few general maintenance tips every homeowner should understand, and enjoy many years of comfort in your newly acquired domicile.

Have your HVAC unit regularly serviced

You’ll want your HVAC unit in good repair for many years to come, and it won’t do the best possible job if you don’t make sure it is in good repair. Hire professionals to check and service your HVAC unit at least once per year to draw the maximum lifespan from your unit.

In between service times, there are a few things you can do to help support your HVAC unit. Install a programmable thermostat for efficiency, and clean the leaves/debris from your outside unit from time to time.

Take a yearly peek at your home’s foundation

As a homeowner, you need to keep an eye on the well-being of your home’s foundation. It doesn’t take much effort to walk around the outside of your home and look for cracks. If you find signs of damage or struggle, take action quickly.

You don’t want to waste time when it comes to trouble with the foundation of your home, so hire professionals to repair your foundation immediately. The foundation of your home is vital to the longevity and wellness of the structure as a whole.

Clean out the gutters and downspouts

Keeping your gutters and downspouts in good working order is important to the longevity of your home’s structure. Pooling water can wreak havoc on your foundation, and your gutters and downspouts are there to solve the problem.

Twice per year, make sure your gutters and downspouts are free of debris. You can also consider installing a stainless steel gutter guard mesh to keep out leaves and twigs so water has a free-flowing route away from your home, so a stormy summer rain won’t set you up for a leaky basement issue.

Pressure wash the home every few years

Your house will get dirty from the natural elements, and you can do a lot to combat the wear and tear of the weather. Take the time to pressure wash the exterior of your home every few years to keep it looking fresh and clean.

Check the plumbing for leaks

Water can be a terrible foe for homeowners, and it’s important to keep your eyes on the maintenance of your plumbing. Check under sinks, around toilets, and in the basement to make sure there are no slow leaks being neglected. If you see signs of trouble, take action to rectify the issue immediately.
