5 Must-Have Qualities of Top Resume Writers

July 8, 2019 by Rachel Leave a Comment

Whether you’ve stayed up to date on your resume or not, it’s hard to deny the importance of a high-quality resume these days. No matter the job you’re applying for, you’ll be asked for a resume of some sort along with a cover letter or portfolio. Unfortunately, writing a resume is not as easy as you would think.

Sure, you know yourself well enough to be able to include all of the necessary info that a potential employer is looking for. But no matter how well you know yourself and how qualified you are, resume writing might not come easy to you. In order to be one of the top resume writers out there, you must have these 5 important qualities.

Communication Skills

Having the ability to communicate effectively is not only helpful in the workplace, but also a major factor of landing a job. When you are able to communicate, you are better able to put your words down on paper in a way that is easy to read as well as enjoyable to read. And don’t even get us started on the importance of communication skills for the upcoming interview.

Ability to Add a Personal Touch

If your resume doesn’t stand out from the pile of other candidates’ resumes, you stand no chance at getting the job. Heck, you probably won’t even get called in for an interview. This is why you need to add your own personal touch to your resume to make it stand out from the crowd.

The best way to do this is to change around the formatting a bit and try something unconventional – just try not to go too crazy. You should never use color or a funky font, just try to do something slightly out of the box in terms of format.

Concise yet Thorough

The ability to be concise is essential, since wordy resumes are often tossed aside. When you aren’t concise, the reader tends to get lost in his or her own thoughts and loses focus on what’s on the page. This is never a good thing, and failing to capture the attention of your reader can be avoided by staying concise and to the point.

Industry Experience

This doesn’t necessarily apply to your resume writing, but rather your skills and qualifications. Before you apply your job, ask yourself if you are qualified and your skills meet the standards of the job description. If they don’t, you probably won’t be considered as a viable candidate. It goes without saying that the more industry experience you have, the better your chances will be.

Sincere and Empathetic

Does your resume come off as sincere? This is extremely difficult to do when you’re essentially bragging about yourself within the contents of your resume, but it is still possible. Do your best to write in a language that doesn’t come off as arrogant, but instead just focuses on your qualifications and the facts. You can even provide actual numbers and stats showing why you are the best fit for the job, rather than just saying you are.
