Full-Spectrum, Broad-Spectrum & CBD Isolate: Understanding Three Different Types Of CBD Extract

February 17, 2021 by Rachel Leave a Comment

If you have ever tried CBD products or maybe you use them on a daily basis, you probably know that there are several factors why the impact of CBD is different for each particular person. These include physical health, genetic makeup, body composition, gender, lifestyle, as well as what type of CBD product you decide to choose.

CBD can be taken into the human body in a number of ways. It can be ingested, administered topically by application on the skin, or inhalation of cannabis smoke or vapour. CBD oil comes in diverse forms including CBD vape products, body cream, extracts, drinks, pills, gummies, the list goes on.

But despite differences in the type of available CBD formats, you might also have noticed words like “whole-plant extract” or “pure CBD oil” on the product’s label. When hemp goes through the extraction process to produce CBD, it gives the three most common types of CBD, namely isolate, full-spectrum, and broad-spectrum, and each is created differently. Let’s learn more about CBD, its uses and different types of CBD extract.

What Is CBD?

Cannabinoids are a group of more than 100 active chemical compounds and phytonutrients found in the Cannabis Sativa plant. Cannabidiol, (CBD), is one of the most popular cannabinoids and accounts for as much as 40% of extracts from the Cannabis Sativa plant. Tetrahydrocannabinol, (THC), is another common cannabinoid found in the Cannabis Sativa plant and is known for its intoxicating properties. THC is responsible for the stoning effects of cannabis. Unlike THC, CBD is considered non-psychoactive, meaning it can cause a ‘high’.

As soon as CBD is introduced into the body, it works with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ESC is a complex system of cannabinoid receptors and neurotransmitters found in the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, brain and immune system. It is the ESC which is responsible for controlling and directing a number of biological functions like cognitive performance, immune response, stress management, mood regulation, pain perception and memory, to mention just but a few.

Health Benefits Of CBD

Studies have shown that CBD brings numerous benefits to humans, and the list continues to grow each day. Fortunately, CBD causes very few, if any, side effects since it is a natural extract. Among other benefits, CBD:

Has the potential to reduce depression, stress & anxiety

CBD has shown promise as a remedy for both depression and anxiety. It accomplishes this from its ability to influence the way your brain receptors react to the body systems that control social behaviour and mood.

May promote sleep

The ability of CBD to reduce anxiety suggests it may also be helpful in improving sleep quality by reducing sleeping difficulties. Some research has even averred that CBD can be effective against insomnia and increases overall sleep amounts.

Has the potential to relieve pain

Recent studies indicate that certain components of cannabis, including CBD, are responsible for its pain-relieving effects. CBD interacts with receptors in your body which are responsible for pain response. Through this interaction, CBD may help reduce pain by impacting endocannabinoid receptor activity and reducing inflammation.

Different Types Of CBD You Need To Know

CBD Isolate

CBD isolate is a compound existing in the hemp plant. After strict filtration, CBD isolate products do not contain cannabinoids, terpenes, flavanols and other compounds. More importantly, it does not contain THC and any psychoactive component. Therefore, CBD isolate oil is considered to be the purest form of cannabis.

CBD isolates are often considered to be products synthesised in the laboratory. Still, CBD isolates, like other CBD types, are all-natural products. CBD isolate provides an excellent choice for people who want to experience CBD but unwilling or unable to take THC-the active ingredient from cannabis. Users do not need to worry about the potential psychological effects of THC in the product. Also, pure CBD oil can let users experience the benefits of CBD directly without being changed by other compounds in the hemp plant.

Full-spectrum CBD

Unlike the CBD isolate, the full-spectrum CBD has less refining process, which means that the full-spectrum CBD product contains all cannabinoids naturally present in the hemp plants, including cannabinoids, flavonoids, terpenes and a minimal amount of THC (0.3%).

Although it is not as refined as the CBD isolate, the full-spectrum CBD has a significant benefit. The multiple components in the full-spectrum CBD will produce the “entourage effect “which will further amplify the therapeutic effect of each cannabinoid and have a more positive impact on the human body. For example, THC, as a small number of components, not only does not affect the spirit of users but can catalyse the synergy between elements. Also, Dr Ethan Russo’s scientific research in the British Journal of pharmacology has proved that the synergistic effect between compounds can produce a higher curative impact than that of compounds working isolated. This means that the use of full-spectrum CBD may provide a higher level of efficacy than CBD isolates.

Broad-spectrum CBD

Broad-spectrum CBD is like the combination of CBD isolate and full-spectrum CBD, which contains all the compounds naturally existing in the hemp plant. However, as CBD isolate, THC is completely removed, which eliminates users’ doubts about THC risks. As there are many cannabinoids in broad-spectrum CBD, it can also provide the “entourage effect” that enhances and brings more evident and positive benefits for users’ efficacy. If you are a first-time consumer who is hesitant about the ingredients of THC but want to experience a complete and adequate CBD product, broad-spectrum CBD will be a suitable choice.
