Screen-Free Fun: 6 Outdoor Games Your Dog and Kids Can Play Together

May 30, 2025 by Rachel Leave a Comment

More and more families are recognising the need to take time out from screens. For putting down the phone or tablet and heading out for fresh air, movement, and good old-fashioned play. Outdoor time is an ideal way for families with children and dogs to burn off energy and encourage healthy habits for everyone involved, whether with two or four legs. Play also strengthens bonds between parents and children, children and siblings and humans and pets. The great news? You don’t need expensive toys or elaborate setups to do this. With a little thought, your back yard, local park or beach can become a perfect playground without a screen in sight, where your kids and dogs can team up for hours at a time.

A great thing about this approach is the huge variety of games and activities that can be part of it. This blog will outline six outdoor games that require little or no extra equipment and are easy, interactive and safe for both your kids and their furry siblings.

Chase and Tag: Classics with a Canine Twist

Tag is a timeless favorite among kids, and dogs love it too. This goes especially for breeds with high energy levels. When played responsibly, this game becomes a fantastic way for your dog to get exercise while helping your kids practice quick reflexes, coordination, and teamwork. Try using a toy or rope as the tag object and have the kids take turns being ‘it’ while the dog chases or joins in. It’s important to keep an eye on both children and pets to make sure everyone plays safely. Avoid rough play and teach your dog basic commands like ‘sit’ and ‘leave it’ to keep things under control.

Fetch Relay: Sharing the Spotlight

Fetch doesn’t have to be a solo sport for your dog. Instead, involve your kids in a fetch relay where they toss a toy back and forth with the dog retrieving in between. This game teaches kids cooperation and timing while giving your pup a fun job to do. For added challenge, set up a simple obstacle course using cones, cushions, or cardboard boxes so your dog and child can both navigate it between throws. Make sure the toy is pet-safe and non-toxic. Rubber balls or plush toys designed for dogs are great options.

Tug-of-War with Rules

Tug-of-war is a high-energy activity that dogs love, and with proper boundaries, kids can safely join in. Using a sturdy tug toy, show your children how to hold and pull safely, avoiding jerky or aggressive movements. Most importantly, make sure your dog understands commands like ‘drop it’ and ‘gentle’ to ensure the game doesn’t become too intense. Supervision is key, especially with younger children, and it’s a good idea to establish that if the dog gets too excited, the game pauses for a break.

Hide-and-Seek: Engaging Minds and Noses

Hide-and-seek is a surprisingly fun game for dogs and kids alike. Ask your child to hide somewhere in the yard or behind a tree and then call the dog to find them. You can use treats or toys to reward your dog when they succeed or simply let the excitement of the discovery be the reward itself. This game taps into your dog’s natural sniffing instincts and gives your kids a sense of adventure. It’s a great way to develop trust between your dog and your children.

Splash Time and Water Games

If it’s warm out, set up a sprinkler or kiddie pool and let your kids and dog splash together. Many dogs love playing in water just as much as children do, and it’s an ideal way to cool down after running around. Whether they’re chasing water from a hose or hopping over puddles, water play can be a refreshing bonding experience. Just be sure your dog is comfortable around water. Some breeds love it, while others prefer dry ground. Always supervise water games to avoid slips and overwhelming either your kids or your dog.

Treat Trails and Backyard Scavenger Hunts

Create a fun backyard scavenger hunt by hiding small dog-safe treats along with items your child can find, like painted rocks or soft toys. Kids love searching for ‘treasure’, and dogs will be thrilled to follow the scent trail. Make sure the treats are appropriate for your dog’s dietary needs. For active or sporty breeds, high-protein food can make a big difference in energy levels and focus during play. That’s why some pet parents turn to options like beef dog food to support their dog’s performance in active games and outdoor time.

Making Outdoor Time a Habit

The real magic of these games lies in their ability to bring the whole family together. Not just children and parents, but your pets. You don’t need a fenced-in yard or a fancy park. Just a little space, a few minutes of your day, and a spirit of fun can create lasting memories.

Dogs thrive on routine and attention, and children benefit from physical movement and the responsibility of caring for another living being. By choosing activities that everyone enjoys, you’re building not only stronger bodies but also stronger bonds. And as you wind down from a day of fun, your dog will be as satisfied as your kids; probably ready for a hearty nap and a nourishing bowl of their favorite food.
