Easy-Peasy Plumbing: Stress-Free Tips for DIY Fixes Around the House

September 11, 2025 by Rachel Leave a Comment

Nobody plans on waking up to a leaky faucet or realizing the kitchen sink sounds like it’s gargling marbles the night before you’re expecting company. Most of us aren’t born handymen (or handywomen), so facing a plumbing quirk on your own can feel like a game of Whac-A-Mole—tighten one thing, and something else decides to drip. The good news? Most basic plumbing fixes don’t require a plumber or a panic attack. With a sprinkle of patience and a few simple tricks, you can solve quite a bit without dialing anyone for backup.

Gather Your Tools—Nothing Fancy Needed

First things first: you don’t need a whole hardware aisle at your disposal. A few basics—like a sturdy adjustable wrench, a flat and a Phillips screwdriver, plumber’s tape (also called Teflon tape), and towels—will tackle most start-up jobs. A small bucket doesn’t hurt, either. Trust me: a quick trip to the bathroom cabinet in your pajamas to scoop up a leak isn’t as fun as it sounds.

Dripping Faucets: The Annoyance That Adds Up

That little tap-tap-tap in the middle of the night isn’t just annoying—it’s wasteful, too. Nine times out of ten, a leaky faucet is just a worn-out washer or o-ring. Turn off your water supply under the sink (this is key!). Unscrew the handle, remove the old washer, and slip in the new one—a job that usually takes ten minutes and a YouTube tutorial. The Spruce has a user-friendly guide, and it’s packed with step-by-step photos.

Clogs and Slow Drains: Don’t Reach for Drano Just Yet

If your kitchen or bathroom sink’s draining slower than molasses in January, the fix is probably easier than you think. Skip the harsh chemicals (they eat your pipes over time) and try a plunger first—yep, the same one you use for the toilet. Still stuck? Most sink traps (that U-shaped pipe under the sink) untwist by hand or with your wrench—put your bucket under first, as things can get messy.

For tubs or bathroom sinks, hair and gunk are the usual suspects. Use a small hook from the hardware store or even a bent wire hanger to pull the gunk out. Family Handyman lays out straight-talk advice for getting water moving again.

Bathtub Stopper Blues: Get Yours Moving Again

Bathtub not holding water, or draining awfully slow? Nine times out of ten, the bathtub stopper is either clogged with old hair (yuck, but it happens to everyone) or jammed out of alignment. Most pop-up stoppers unscrew or simply lift out with a twist or gentle pull (just look for a set screw underneath the cap). Give it a good clean, clear out any debris, and rinse well before popping it back in.

Know When to Call the Pros

If you spot water where it shouldn’t be—under floors, in the walls, or any time there’s a weird smell or persistent leak—there’s zero shame in calling in backup. You’re saving time and money by tackling simple jobs, so don’t let a bigger mess get worse.

A Little Confidence Goes a Long Way

The next time a faucet leaks or your bathtub stopper gets stuck, don’t panic! With the right tools and a touch of know-how, you’ll be amazed at how much you can fix yourself. Worst case? You’ll have a good story—and you’ll definitely be more plumbing-savvy than you were yesterday.
