How to Organize a Storage Space When You’re Between Homes and Keep Your Sanity Intact

June 19, 2025 by Rachel Leave a Comment

Whether you’re moving out before moving in or renting while waiting for the builder’s final touches, living between homes can feel like hanging in limbo. But in these situations, your stuff shouldn’t feel just as misplaced as you do.

Smart storage soutions—yes, even if it’s that windowless unit across town—makes a world of difference. Let’s turn that storage space from a stress magnet into an organized oasis.

Plan First, Pack Later

Before you start tossing boxes in the trunk, make a list of everything you’ll need to store. Visualize your storage unit as you pack—think of it like a game of Tetris, but with actual consequences if you lose track of your kitchen mixer.

Group your belongings by room or by use, so future-you won’t have to tear apart the whole unit to find clean towels or the charger for your drill.

It can also help to measure big furniture and sketch out a layout for the unit. It only takes a few extra minutes and is worth its weight in headaches saved later.

Label Like a Pro

When every box is brown and covered in tape, good labeling is your lifeline. Label the top and at least one side of every box—think big, bold letters! Go beyond “kitchen” or “bedroom.” Adding details like “coffee mugs—front right” or “winter coats—left side” can be a game changer, especially if your storage stint drags on. If you’re into tech, snap a photo of box contents or use a spreadsheet to map out where everything is.

QR code labels or simple number systems offer even more detail and help make tracking boxes easy and fast.

Use Uniform Boxes (Trust Me Here)

It might seem tempting to use every odd-shaped box you’ve got stashed in the garage, but uniform boxes are easier to stack, safer, and make the most of vertical space. Going for one or two sizes keeps towers steady and stops your storage space from turning into a tumbling nightmare every time you need something from the bottom row.

Stack the heaviest boxes on the bottom, lighter ones on top, and leave a small aisle down the middle so you never have to climb over your own stuff. Plastic bins are excellent for items you’ll need to grab—think off-season clothes or important documents—since you can see through them, and they’re more resistant to pests and moisture.

Prioritize and Make a “Front Row”

Nobody wants to sift through holiday decorations when all you need is your cookware. Place the items you’ll need most often up front or right by the door. Leave seasonal or “if-I-really-need-it” things at the back. If you’re storing furniture, break it down as much as possible and use mattress covers or blankets to keep it safe from scratches.

Keep It Clean and Accessible

If you’ve ever opened a storage unit to find layers of dust (or spiders), you know what a chore it is to let things sit unchecked. Cover everything with plastic sheeting, especially if your storage isn’t climate controlled. Swing by every few weeks to check for leaks, critters, or anything that needs a quick fix. You’ll thank yourself when it’s finally time to move out—and in.

Bridging the gap between homes isn’t easy, but a little extra thought with your storage unit gives you peace of mind—and makes that first night in your new place a lot less hectic.
